Hello again forum members. We are always appreciative of your help.
1995 Camry LE wagon.
Because of rough idling some months ago I changed the spark plugs and the engine fires up great now but still rough idling when stopped. I put it in neutral when at a light.
Two days ago the distributor and rotor were changed. Surprised to see the old ones (pictured here) looking quite healthy for not being changed in 8 years.
I understand that there will be some vibrations from hundreds of parts that over the years and miles that have worn even slightly thinner / therefore more loose.
Latest problem is that now when i turn over the engine- even with a warm engine, occasionally I have to give it gas or it will cut out.
A neighbor suggested fuel filter or water in the engine. How would water in the engine happen? The engine is also clean, no oil whatsoever.
Not sure what to do next.... any additives to help perhaps? We can live with the vibration but now worry about the so far- only occasional,
starting problem which when running runs fine.
Thank you for your response.
I waited a day to reply as we intended to go to a few places this morning- and there was no such issue as mentioned in the thread origin, so I don't know.
The engine when I turn the key fires up strongly right away with a very short crank time.
The check engine light has not come on.
I drive the car most days, perhaps 5 days a week and only during bad weather might it sit for three days.
Below are three pictures of the distributor in my Camry.
Thank you again.
Toyota had two models of Camry for that generation of car. One model was built to meet California emissions standards and one for Federal standards. The California car had an ign system with a remotely located ign coil. The Federal model had the ign coil built into distributor. The built in ign coil could have it housing crack over time assumed do to heat leading to ign problems.
If your distributor has only 4 ign wires on the cap it is internal coil. If ign problems persist might check the coil housing for cracks.
Any change in engine performance on days with high moisture which could get into the ign coil housing if cracked?
There should be no issues with the car sitting a few days between driving.
The Camry is a solid car. I own the same year but a sedan.
Thank you for replying. I waited to drive the car to see what it was like today as we drove to three places and each time the engine turned over OK.
There is usually a very short crank time when turning the key... it fires up strongly and right away.
I usually drive the car almost every day and it never sits for more than three days and that's unusual really.
No check-engine light came on either during these hesitant start-ups.
Here's a couple of pictures of the old distributor and rotor that look almost new after many years.
Thank you again.
Thank you again!
I appreciate the information.
Perhaps another quite simple job first would be to replace the PCV valve and hose to possibly help with the rough idle.
Last time the valve, hose and grommet was changed was in February 2022 and I notice now that the hose is sticky, so maybe wearing down.
Hello and thanks for the tips, will run the Camry later to check RPM's.
Can I ask for an opinion please:
The only place I could locate a new PCV hose was eBay so I ordered one along with the accompanying valve and grommet.. it came today and seller states it is absolutely for my 1995 Camry LE 2.2.
Although I haven't torn open the new packages I did check the size against the one hose in my engine and it looks too small in circumference to attach to the top metal pipe and also doesn't look long enough.
I contacted the seller again with pictures and he insists it will fit and that my original hose has expanded through wear. (it will have but that much?)
I have added here pictures of my engine and that area, along with pictures of the new pieces whereby the new hose looks like it will fit the new valve and grommet but not the current one in use..
I hope someone can please verity the new parts WILL fit and if so, whether there is indeed a way- perhaps softening the new hose somehow first -- to attach the new hose and then the other parts.
Thank you very much!.
Hello again.
After a long time of rough idling issues with my 1995 Camry, within the last few weeks I replaced the spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor. Nothing changed much.
However on Sunday when driving, the car suddenly stalled without warning and check-engine light came on. We were far from home (this has never happened before) but thankfully it started up again after a few minutes and got us home. I thought it had corrected itself so
Monday drove off and same thing happened. Monday afternoon I installed a new PVC valve, air filter and lightly cleaned the EGR system which barely had any build-up, unfortunately when backing out afterwards to test drive it it stalled.
Took it to a mechanic today and he found all was working well except the distributor! Had to have it replaced with a new one. It now drives well. The mechanic said the revs were really high but I have no clue why. He lowered them.
Below is a picture of the idle speed I took on Monday before the distributor was replaced.
We'll see how it goes.
Thank you for all your help.
