Default MPG drop after oil change

Hi,

I have a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE 4 cylinder with about 25K miles. I recently got an oil change done at a Toyota dealership. They had a $17.99 oil change special. After the oil change, the MPG has dropped significantly. Before the oil change, the digital MPG gauge used to show 20-25 mpg in the city and 30+ on the highway but now it shows 10-17 mpg in the city and 20-25 mpg on the highway. Also the mpg reading starts to drop even when the car is stationary, like standing at a light etc. This was not the case earlier.

So not sure what could have happened during my last visit to the dealer (Atlantic Toyota in Lynn, MA). Would appreciate any ideas/suggestions/similar experiences.

Thanks!

Might read the post from kdmeyer at this site.

Do you know what type of oil was used?

Any change in gasoline used such as the addition of alcohol?

The oil change receipt shows 5w20 Exxon/Mobil. I have the previous 2 oil change receipts and they show the oil as 5w20 as well, so doesn't look like there's a change there. No change in the gasoline type and no additives either. Basically the mpg gauge was acting funny right after the oil change and I noticed it as soon as I drove the car out of the dealership. Did not think of going back to the dealer right then as I thought it could be temporary but it's been quite a while and the problem still exists. Will check kdmeyer's post. Thanks

Run a check of MPG by filling the tank full. Compute MPG based on miles driving and gallons refilled. Stop filling when the pump shuts off.

Do what toyomoho said. Your average mileage may have been reset. If I reset mine it will show a decrease in average while not moving as you described. As you put more miles, and gallons, in the equation that will level out. Average mpg readings are not worth much until you have run several hundred miles and it gets more accurate. If you want really good numbers, watch it over several thousand miles and through different seasons.
