For Camry, the 97 and 99 engines appear the same. The 1997 was improved over the 1996.

The 2000 engine appears to have changes to the injectors, IAC valve and a few other things.

Suggest sticking to 97-99 and making sure the engines emissions systems are the same. This being meeting either Federal or California emissions standards. There should be a sticker on the hood stating which standard the car was built to.

You can also ask at the Toyotanation website.
