Smile Poor Fuel Economy 2000 4-cylinder Camry

I just bought a 2000 Camry with about 96,000 miles and am disappointed with the MPG. I'm doing good if I get 16-17 mpg. Thanks in advance for your ideas/recommendations.

Combo hwy and city is about 26 mpg.

If the engine runs fine hot or cold check for a sluggish AF sensor.

Given these are expensive try to find a real time ODBII code reader that can output the data such as fuel trim. The sensor could be causing the engine to run rich.

Default Dyi?

Thanks. I don't have a lot of experience workin' on cars. Is replacing the AF sensor something I can do myself?

Yes, but the part can be expensive. Which is why suggest accessing the real time data as the engine runs.

So, does the engine run OK hot or cold?

If the engine runs OK hot or cold then suggest connecting the code reading/scanner and obtaining real time data.

One output will be fuel trim. If the AF sensor is bad the computer may be getting the wrong signal and adding too much fuel.

You can also watch AF sensor voltage changes, an indication of how it is operating.
