1991 Toyota Camry Sedan - What Fuel Economy do I believe?
I am thinking of buying a 1991 Toyota Camry sedan on craigslist. I have been looking for something that gets good gas mileage along with good reliability. I knew to start with Toyota as I have a '91 Previa that runs great and has 205,000 miles on it. I looked on fueleconomy.gov for the mpg's on the Camry and they range from 21 - 24 average mpg. The car I'm looking at on craigslist is a 4 cylinder and the examples they gave on the fuel economy site were also 4 cylinders (I saw the ones that were 6 cylinders and they seem to be even worse). Why the descrepency in mpg's?
Another thing....I see people all over the internet claiming to get 30 or 40 consistent mpg on these 91 Camrys. I don't see how that's possible. Who do I believe?
Does the 91 Camry get good gas mileage or not?

go to toyotanation forum for your year and ask them there; average responses. my bet is you'll be around 24-25 average at the best. one thing I have learned about 4 bangers - they work too hard on larger cars and do not have good mpg. you'll be better off buying 95 Civic, which is plenty for single driver, and still gets high 30s to mid 40s mpg. I know. mof, my beat up 91 Civic, coughing and shaking, did 38 average.
Had a new 88 sedan 4cyl. 5 spd. and continually got 48 if I kept it at 60 or below. Syracuse to Boca Raton 65 with a/c on averaged 39+.
My DD now is an 88 wagon 4cyl, 5 spd. and I average 34-37 hwy. because of body style. This one now has 193K on it. Automatic will probably get less.
