Default "thunk" sound when put in drive

Just purchased a new 2010 Camary LE. We hear a "thunk" sound when we back out of our drive way from a cold start, shift to drive and roll about 10ft. it sounds as if an accuator is engaging but my wife is freaking out about a sound coming from a new car.
Is it normal or not?
we also have an 2003 LE and it does the same thing but it didn't show up until 50,000 miles of driving.
What do you guys think?

If you put the trans in reverse but have the brakes on (car does not move) do you still hear the thunk?

Sometimes the brake pads will shift a little in their holder between reverse and forward.

Or could be a suspension issue.

Suggest you ask the question at the Toyotanation website. The site has a lot more members some of which may own the same year/model car. Have read other posts about same problem on this year/model car but don't know the cause.

Take the car back to the dealer and complain.

If it does this only once every key cycle- it might be the ABS hydraulic unit performing a self check. Once happens once per engine start up once the vehicle rolls to approx 5 MPH. If you seek peace of mind- take it in to your local dealership.
