So without going into complete gut wrenching detail, I've made a repair blunder (i paid for work which i thought the tech was qualified for which he was not) which has resulted in a noisy transmission. Still shifts ok, no leaks or weird vibration but it whines now as it runs. Not overly noisy, but a definite whine. I took it to a garage that does some of my work. They checked the fluid and did a visual inspection and suggested it wasn't bad enough to cause a fluid/filter flush/change. The car was mouse quiet before the engine mount/front end fiasco took place and now we have the whine. Since the car has 200+ K miles on it, and I'm already out over $ 1500 for the repairs I'm loathe to keep throwing money at the car. However.....the car essentially runs well, is reasonably quiet, and is adequate transportation. With the new car dealers holding everyone hostage now, I might want to chase the noise down and see if there's a cure without a complete new/rebuilt tranny.

What was the repair? Was the transmission rebuilt?

Describe the noise in more detail. Noise in gear, out of gear, car standing still, on road, speeding up, slowing down?

 

No, a tire business near me has a couple of "certified" mechanics who offered to change out the engine mounts and front suspension parts. After the first repair, the vibration of the engine was very bad and so i took it back and the mechanics suggested that all the engine mounts should be replaced. And this was when the whine showed up along with the continued engine vibration. I realized then that these guys were just run of the mill tire guys looking for extra money. So this time I took it to a local repair facility who correctly replaced the mounts which stopped the engine vibration. But the whine in the transmission continued. Without knowing exactly what happened, my theory is that when the guys tried replacing engine mounts the second round, they supported the weight of the engine in the wrong place and either twisted the transmission housing or incorrectly loaded a drive member with the weight of the engine. The whine almost sounds like a bad bearing. It's most noticeable as the car accelerates through the first 3 gears. The whine only occurs when the transmission is actually propelling the car forward. It rises and falls with the RPM of the engine. The last garage checked the fluid and drove the car for several miles and essentially suggested that I drive the car as is. So far I've resisted the impulse to change the fluid and screen or add any type of additive to it. I considered taking it to a transmission repair facility, but my track record with transmission companies is awful. So....what to do ?

 

Wow, sorry to hear that you're having a rugged time with your tranny.
Does it only whine while in gear? Will it do it in park?
Something tells me chasing this noise will be expensive on an older car.
I also understand about the car dealers holding us hostage! I just bought a used Camry and paid more than I wanted for sure and I'm still happy though!
