hi all,
i am doing my best to help my parents ,i did a search and did not find anything that mached the same problem 4-cyl automatic
some came closebuti will try andexplane , my dad mad a left turn and the car died he restarted in and it chugged and banged
and stalled coughed and sputtered and almost every time he put it in gear it would die above a out 1200 rpm it was ok , when 1 st looked at it it ran fine . i looked at it again today and it was very bad it would not idle after it was warm when it did the tach
was jumping up and down and does have a slight high rpm miss. the distributor is newer, i did not find any vacuum leaks
no codes in the computer .....any help please

 

Does it run ok in gear and driving above 1200rpm or doesn't stall andidlesabove 1200rpm but won't run in gear?

If the EGR is stuck/sticking open that is the same as a vacuum leak and the car will not idle but will run at higher rpm. Removing the EGR and cleaning, as well as the exhaust tube to it, will correct.Chack the vacuum switching valve (VSV) to the EGR as well. What type of service has this car seen? When - plugs, wires, Distr, rotor?

 

it has 217,000 miles on it , been very well maintained cap was new with dist. plugs and wires ok.
it drives ok at 1500 to 2000 and up slight miss though the car does not idle well it starts off
pretty normal and then misses a bit the idle comes up a bit and the falls and stumbles ,
you most of the time you can not put the car in to gear when its at idle . i pulled all
spark plugs all dry , cleaned the filter on the egr (controler? located just to the right of
the egr valve) . the problem just started in the blink of an eye the car had been running
100% fine and then ?

 

Try cleaning the EGR, not just the air filter on it. Also try cleaning idle air control (IAC).
These are two easy DIYr cheap trys. Does this car have a throttle position sensor?

tps...yes...and seems to be working (viewed with scan tool)

 

replaced fuel filter , spark plugs , cleaned egr and iac,
now have a slight miss at idle and under quick acceleration
it stumbles

 

9 times i have typed all the details i could and hit the preview
and i get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

i am doning in notepad 1st .
ok i spent the afternoon working on moms car, i replaced the fuel filter and the spark plugs
i cleaned the e.g.r and the i.a.c it helped the car now idles but has a slight miss
but you can now put the car in gear and it is sort of driveable slow acceleration you can
tell it has a miss but its mild if you stomp on the accelerator the car hesitates and then
takes off like a rocket and toward upper rpm under load you can hear a whistle sound (vacuum leak?)
i dont know if the car did this before i worked on it. when you push the pedal to the floor
its almost like it boggs down and some times it will do a single small back fire and all is
ok until you slow down and step on it hard again ,
still attempting to get mom and dad back on the road
