Default 1992: Disconnect air bag?

Hey all, I'd really like to disconnect the air bag on my '92 Camry. The car was in a jarring wreck a few years ago and I'm fairly certain it's just a matter of time before that damn thing has some sort of delayed reaction and breaks my nose.

Could someone instuct me how to do this?

Also, will this affect my car's performance?

The airbag system uses special impact switches to trigger them. The switches only trigger in an frontal accident. If it did not go off in the accident it should not go off now.

I can live with it for the moment, but I would like to change out to a sportier steering wheel sans air bag eventually...do these things usually get in the way?

I'm afraid most of my automotive knowledge lays in the days before air bags. Heh.

You can change the steering wheel OK.

If you disconnect the drivers airbag the complete system will shut down (passengers side also).

If working on the steering wheel disconnect the battery and wait for at least 90 seconds. You can install an airbag simulator that will allow the rest of the system to work again.

you should also have the sensors checked. I hit a deer in my moms sienna a few years ago, but he airbags never went off. turns out that the deer hit right between them and snapped them both off, without setting off the system. The body shop missed it but luckily the garage didn't.....if you had a bad accident, but they didn't go off, check to make sure they're still working

Well, I was poking around andunderneath my center consoleand resting right behind the E-brakeis a goldish box with a yellow cord plugged into it that looks like it belongs to the airbag system. if I unplug this, will it deactive the system or set off the airbag?

Personnally I think you're nuts to try and disconnect the air bag, a device that's there to protect you. Consider this. If you get into an accident that's not your fault and the other party's insurance company finds out you disconnected the air bag, and that led to your injuries, they will contest paying you for your medical expenses. If you are the cause of the accident and your insurance company finds you disabled the air bag, they may refuse to pay for your medical expenses. If there's a passenger air bag, and your passenger is injured because ofa disconnectedair bag, then you will be liable.

umm he did say he wanted a new steering wheel, but neways, you should leave the system alone for atleast 10 mins, just cause there is still some energy theere, afytter unplugging the negative battery erminall. just be careful AND DONT USE A POWERED tEST LIGHT
