1996 Camry with 200K
We are considering purchasing a 1996 Camry for my Mom with 200K on the clock. Can anyone give me some insight into potential issues with this year car. What to look out for on a Camry with such high mileage. Any insight would be much appreciated.
Thanks and regards

RE: 1996 Camry with 200K
get logs books first off!!! if it has been serviced every 5000-10000 k's then it'll be fine. camrys will run forever if they're serviced reguarly. check for oil leaks around the motor, check the dip stick (if it has sedament on it or looks dirty in general it hasnt been serviced for a while) and weird clings clanks clangs, check the shock absorbers with the bounce test, rev the engine to see if there is oil smoke coming out the exhaust (if there is there is an oil seal broken in the back of the motor), suspension, the interior and make sure all the buttons and knobby things work. take it to ur local mechanic also and get them to check it all out. Make sure u dont get ripped off!

heres a trick to get rid off fog easily in ur car (if ur talkin about the inside) put the fan on hot and have the air con on as well, sounds stupid u say but it works better than just the heat blowin on ur window just make sure ur vents in the dash facing are off (or u'll freeze ur ***) and its on demister

RE: 1996 Camry with 200K
As a matter of fact I just purchased a 1996 Camry with the about 200k. Been a great car with a few exceptions. There was a minimal popping/clunking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle everytime I hit a bump in the road. Naturally I assumed it was struts and spent a day replacing all four in the vehicle which made all the difference in the world in the ride but did nothing for the clunking coming from the rear end. The only thing I can imagine it would be was worn bushings which really won't hurt anything but might make your tires wear a little uneven over time. So no big deal. I've read that the 1996/97 Camry/Avalon is notorious for this problem but it really hasn't been an issue that I can't live with. This car has been taken care of but with that many miles there is always going to be something to replace. Other than that, just normal wear and tear with the exception of the Anti-Knock Sensor, new head-gasket, and Cat Converter. I put all new tires on it, a new windshield, new belt, and even had the bad-boy detailed to get all the french-fries out of the seat...plan on driving it for another 200k or until the wheels fall off. Parts are a little pricey but it sure beats making car payments. Good luck.
