2000 4cyl camry automatic with 113k mi. never had any problems with the engine light expect when the gas cap came loose once ot twice a few years ago. while driving a few days ago the check engine light came on. No noise or notice of irregularites in daily driving. the engine oil is fine, the engine temp is fine.

thus im not going to take it in and pay someone $50 to tell me my gas cap is loose again, or something minute like that.

where can i find out how to decode the light? im assuming a chiltons manual? How do you get the car to decode( couple turns of the stering wheel?, and step on the brakes>??)

any help would be great

Autozone will do it for free!

 

The CEL does come on for no reason sometimes. An easy way to make it shut off is to remove the neg battery clamp for a couple minutes. Then reattach. If nothing's wrong, it will stay off.
If it comes on after this, THEN you should pull codes.
