2005 Camry Downshifting
Purchased a used 2005 Camry about a month ago. Still getting used to it; a former lifelong GM owner. Have LE w/ 4 cyl automatic with about 8000 miles. Have begun to notice when I am going downhill at a speed greater than 45 mph and then begin to apply the brakes, when the speed drops to between 40 - 45 mph, there's a hard, very noticeable downshift - almost like it's dropping 2 gears. This occurs with Overdrive turned ON, and I've just begun to play around with the O/D off to see if there is a difference. Is this normal? Is there something that I can have the dealer check. Would appreciate any suggestions / insight. Thanks!

RE: 2005 Camry Downshifting
i just bought a 05 camry 4cyl and notice the same hard downshifting..I took a look at the tranny fluid and it was broken down.So i did a drain and fill to try and help. It seemed to help a little bit so im gonna continue to do a couple more drain and fills to clean it up nice. Other than that this car has been great so far. Fun on the highways with always plenty of punch on the gas. Impressive 4 cyl sedan by all means atleast.

RE: 2005 Camry Downshifting
I went with my wife to the dealership just yesterday because the same phenomenon was bothering her. We have an '05 XLE. The tech was very friendly, drove it around with us in the car with him, & explained it was quite normal. The computer detects the slowing down & braking, so downshifts to assist. The computer does other things to improve fuel consumption, etc., & also tailors its behavior to how the car has been driven.
