What lead to the dealer stating the oil pan needs a new gasket, is there oil on the floor? If so, how much oil is leaking? How much oil needs to be added to the engine due to the leaking?

The oil pan does not use a typical gasket you think about. Instead a bead of sealant is applied to the oil pan flange that faces up with the engine block. kind like a caulking compound but for engines.

When the pan is bolted to the block the sealant squeezes out forming a tight seal. This process replaces what would be a typically gasket. You may be able to buy a real gasket from an aftermarket autoparts store.

To replace the sealant, the old gasket material needs to be scraped off, the mating surfaces of the block and pan cleaned then new sealant applied. Then wait at least 2 hours for the material to start to cure.

Toyota sells the sealant in small tubes squeezed by hand. An autoparts store should have something that will work like Permatex black, see link below:

http://www.permatex.com/products/aut...sket_maker.htm

Always read the sealant directions as to installation method and cure time as different products have different cure times plus may recommend that different chemicals be used or not used for cleaning the surfaces.

If the car can be lifted up allowing you to get under it, this will greatly improve pan removal. There are a couple of plastic shields under the car needing removal, the exhaust pipe will need to be disconnected from the engine.

Not sure what else. I don't think any chassis or suspension parts needing to be removed but not sure. Lift the car up and take quick look. Take note of any chassis or suspension parts that might be in the way.

But first when under the car find the leak (if any) to confirm there really is a problem with oil pan gasket leaking.

If the pan gasket does leak, the leakage should be minor and if keeping an eye on the oil level not a problem. Thus you will have time to research the issue and decide if you or the dealer are going to fix the problem.

Might also get quotes from third party mechanics which should be cheaper. The dealer is typically the most expensive place, this is a job any shop or reasonable skilled mechanic should be able to do.

Bing, bing, bing!! ON TARGET.

Also, if it's your garage floor you're worried about staining, go to an autoparts store
and buy a lightweight stainless steel 'drip pan' that you can put under engine to protect your garage floor.
It looks kinda like a very huge cookie sheet.
~$20 = cheapest solution.
