i hace a 96 5sfe with a bad crankshaft can i put a new crank in it and not run the balance
assy or is it required. i have heard it is only for noise reduction it this true.

Four cylinders tend to have more vibration than 6+ engines. My understanding is you can leave it off but you will notice more engine vibration - how much I can't say. If the balance shaft is operating properly why would you want to leave it off, do you think you know more than Toyota engineers?
