Default '97 Camry - P1133 Code - Oxygen Sensor Questions

I have a '97 Camry with 165K+ miles on it. Driving home from work today the CEL came on. I went straight to an O'Reilly Auto and had the code pulled. The result was a P1133. There were no other codes.

Initial quotes for the sensor were in the $120 range for both the upstream and downstream sensors ($220 total). I then realized, my car has a California emission. The price jumped to over $200 for the front one alone.

I've done some searching around, and found some much better prices for aftermarket sensors (in the $70 range) at places like RockAuto.

My question is, is it recommended to replace both sensors at the same time? What are your thoughts on the aftermarket sensors? What's the harm in letting it go like this for a couple of weeks - driving about 20 miles a day? I figure it'll take at least a week to get the parts.

The front sensor seems easy enough, the rear seems like it might be a bit challenging. Any thoughts or recommendations / tips are appreciated.

Rockauto has very good prices. Search this sites post for the last month or the internet for a 5% off discount code for use when purchasing items.

Make sure you buy the correct sensor, this being for a California emissions car. The front and rear sensor may not be the same part number or design.

Unless you have some diagnostic skills to check the sensor heater and output voltage might replace the front sensor first. The rear one seldom fails.

Confirm there were no other codes.

The issue could be something other then a senor.

This code can occur if the car ran out of gas.

Youtube may have videos on replacing the sensors.

Unless the engine is running super rich (check for an MPG drop and black smoke out the exhaust) you should be OK waiting for the parts. A very rich condition can cause damage to the emissions converter.

Default Videos of front and rear oxygen sensor replacements

I just replaced all of the O2 sensors on my '97 Camry V6 this past year and made videos (in excruciating detail):
Front two sensors:
Rear sensor:

I hope you find them helpful!
