Something broke and locked it up. My son-in-law said it just stopped running and he coasted to the side of the road.

Both engines are well built and will go well beyond 200K with proper maintenance.

Have son-in-law check for a broken timing belt.

Yeah, a busted timing belt can ruin your day. I made sure to buy the Camry with the timing chain so as to avoid this issue. I hope it is nothing that serious, I'm pretty sure these are interference engines.
