Question 98 Camry wont stop turning over.

My 98 Camry starter wont stop turning over. When I hook up the battery the starter just spins even when keys are not in the ignition. Although it wont start until the ignition is in the on position. Any suggestions other than taking it to the stealership?

Most likely cause is the starter motor solenoid. Follow the large red wire from the battery to the starter motor. It connects to the solenoid portion of the motor.

The solenoid is just a large electrical switch the connects the battery to the starter motor. If it sticks closed the motor will turn regardless of ign key position.

You can get a new starter or repair the solenoid using new parts from the Toyota dealer. There parts are called solenoid electrical contacts, cost around $35ish.

With prolonged usage the contacts tend to burn out, stick, fail to make contact, etc.

If you know what your doing you can replace the contacts in under an hour. The starter typically does not have to removed from the engine to do this.

Might do a Google search on this, common problem.
