Default Air Filter Housing Nut fell thru!

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and have a very rare problem. I regularly check/change my air filter and last week. something very strange happened. I changed the filter as normal... As I was fiddling around to get the bolt (upper screw) back into the lower nut to finish the job, the lower nut fell out! I was befuddled. It isn't a huge deal but it does bother me. The air filter housing seemed to be ok with only the back bolted on, but just in case, I used a plastic tie to secure the front end of the air filter housing just in case. I went to a Toyota dealership on Saturday, 10/18, and they could not find the part. They think that the bottom nut might be a part of the housing itself, which costs $501. There has to be a way around this. It's not a big deal, but peace of mind for me, knowing that something in my car isn't as it should be.

Anyone ever experience anything like this before? Thanks in advance.

What year, model and engine size.

Can you remove the lower portion of the box then reinstall the nut or similar?

It's a 2003 Camry LE, 4 Cylinder. I would like to reinstall the nut but I do not know where to buy the nut and it doesn't seem to be your generic nut. It it supposed to be attached to the lower portion of the air filter box... i'm guessing that the glue, or whatever was supposed to hold the nut to the box, wore off. Also, forgot to mention that the nut I lost fell through and I do not have it anymore, although I have the matching bolt.

If you can access the lower portion of the box then determine the size of the nut. Having the bolt you can find metric nuts of the same thread and diameter at most hardware stores. Find one that is slightly larger then file it down to press fit into the area of the old nut.

You could also install a nut then bolt it up and back fill the nut area with something like silicone seal to keep it in place. Silicone is flexible and will allow the bolt to come back out.

Thumbs up

I know this is an older thread, but I've looked everywhere for this nut and couldn't find it. Until I ran into this:

Toyota Air Filter Box Bolts and Nuts

Hopefully this will help others who have the same issue.

Also try checking the website of Clips and Fasteners. They might have it.

Default It happens more often then you think!

Same thing happened to me. I took it to my mechanic and he said he’s seen this issue plenty of times and as long as the remaining bolt stays on tight, you won’t have any problems.

me being the perfectionist that I am and not wanting to just rely on one bolt, I was able to buy a replacement housing for $37 and just replaced the whole unit. I tried to find the nut, but the dealer didn’t have it and supposedly couldn’t order it install it
