Default CAT Converter sticker shock..!!!!!

For 1987 2.0 4cyl

they saw u yota guys comin. just called a local shop and $ 475 for the front cat/manifold. they said most the time the rear isn't needed. so, for 475 i could go out and buy another camry to look at in driveway.. i'm thinking to fix my 77 ford ltd wagon and use that at 13mpg, just drive half as far

That's the rub in price being CARB approved.

I talked to the smog test guy and he heard of someone somehow taking the Cat apart from manifold and ? maybe attaching another Cat or something like that. guess it would still have to be a carb approved one though but u'd save on the manifold if it could be done

Might be BS but found this;
http://search.aol.com/aol/search?ena...C.A.R.B.+calif.

link to video showing how to rebuild a Cat to c.a.r.b. I have dial-up so can't watch now...later from california full of in our pocket politicians

Did the car fail an emissions test or have a CAT trouble code?

The lower CAT portion of the manifold is available. The issue is finding a CARB approved part.

I dont know if it failed, but after setting for 8 years i'd think not passing smog is why it wasn't driven. Just tring to figure worst case expence to make it whole again.
