Default Coolant Leakage

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry, it overheats about 10 minutes into driving. Also leaks coolant under the engine, I checked under the engine and there is this black foam like pad about half to three quarts thick that seems to be more like a sponge. When I touched it, more coolant came out just like a wet sponge would do. I still don't know where the leakage is coming from. Also checked the thermostat its good. Radiator is not leaking, hoses are good. I suspect the water pump, but I don't see any indication of leakage from the water pump. Can you please help me with this?

How did you check it?

Is the WP driven off the timing belt? Could be leaking out pulley shaft which should be covered by front timing belt cover. Could it be leaking from overflow tank overflow?

Default Coolant Leakage

Hello Pedro,
Thanks for responding, the way I checked the leak was by by driving the car on two ramp stands, got under it and followed the dripping path as far as I could see.

I do believe what your saying about the over flow tank, I must admit I did not know there was one? Although I still can't find the source.

Yes, the water pump is on the side along with the other pulleys under one belt.

Thanks you very much for your concern.

We are here to try and help best possible...But you give limited to no information. We need more details...What size engine is it?

What makes you suspect the waterpump? Does it take alot of water/coolant daily weekly etc...

It could be something simple like a hose....or something a little more difficult like a waterpump.. could be a cracked overflow a number of things...Your best bet is to rinse down the engine real good so you can pinpoint the leak. Once you find it give us more details and we can help you further.

Here is the answer to your problem. What you have is a broken hose under the manifold. remove it along with the vacuum hoses and the fuel injectors. replace the hose that come across. This hose is about 9 inches long. clean the gaskets for the manifold because you can reuse them. also buy liquid gasket to put in both sides of the metal gaskets (3 of them) that you just cleaned. When you fill the car with coolant, use Prestone coolant then half of 50/50 prestone. in total you need 2 bottles of Prestone. I would recommend to replace the rear and front spark plugs for iridium and the upper cover gaskets for the back and the front of the engine for $25. I don't read much of this forum but I had this problem a week ago and I want to help.
