I have a 99 Camry. The rear driver door opens from the outside, but won't open from the inside.

At first, I suspected the child lock or a disconnected rod to the interior door handle, but it's not the child lock (checked it). And, I when I latch the door with just a metal rod (door's open), and then work the interior handle . . . the latch releases.

Any ideas what's going on, and why it won't open when closed?
