my Camry lost power. it starts up easy, idles fine but now pings when trying to rev the engine after setting the timing, it was off by a degree or two. it sporadically will rev up normal. checked all ignition,changed spark plugs, checked coil, cap & rotor wires all good, temp sensors replaced, complete timing belt kit installed 5 months ago. distributor replaced 5 months ago(factory Toyota part)
any ideas what can be causing this. checked for codes but no codes and check engine light is not on.
I re-checked the time set it again and the pinging stopped. when I rev the engine it will hesitate to rev up then when the RPM is up the engine sounds normal but only at high engine rev.

checked the EGR vacuum modulator yesterday and it's clean, also cleaned out the throttle body and vacuum ports. problem still there

 

Does the engine ping at idle, when revved up, both, etc?

Test the EGR by applying vacuum to the small hose port on the EGR valve. When applied at engine idle, the engine should quit or start to run rough.

Did you set the timing using the procedure of connecting the E1 and TE1 terminals?

Any chance of bad fuel?

 

engine stopped pinging after I set the timing,it will valve knock when I try to rev it up quickly, it won't knock if I rev it up slowly and it sounds normal at high rev and no knocking, just no power when I try to drive it. Ok I will do a test on the egr today. I did not connect E1 and TE1 to set the timing. the
I fueled it up 3 days before the problem started.
should I start testing all sensors like AIC,throttle position sensor......

 

I checked the EGR and it's working fine.

 

Warm up engine then connect E1 and TE1 terminals. Engine should rev then drop to normal idle. Then check and set timing.

Might be a failing fuel pump/low fuel pressure. This can lead to a lean mixture/knocking and loss of power.

 

ok, I'll re-set the timing. I am able to rev it up keep high RPM and no knocking.
I will run a fuel pressure test. Can an old fuel filter cause this problem?

A plugged filter can cause lack of power. This stated it is rare for the can filter in the engine compartment to become plugged.

Fuel pressure engine off and pump relay bypassed is 38-44 psi.

Start engine and idle. Disconnect and plug vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator. Pressure same as above.

Connect vacuum hose. Pressure 31-37 psi.
