Default heater control

Haven't been here for awhile and hope everyone is well.
I have a 93 Camry xle and the heater control on the dash was stiff. I unattached the cable at the heater valve and verified that the valve was not stiff.
I then used a cable lubricating device to get some lube up into the cable. all seemed to be going fine until I reassembled everything and went to turn the ****. It seemed like the **** was stripped and wouldn't move the cable. (yes, i put everything back together just as it was) More specifically the shaft was still being turned by the **** but the shaft wasn't moving the cable. I was nothing but gentle with it.
I looked in the book and it looked like a plastic bevel gear and a radial rack type thing that moves the cable.
Unbelievability, I found the whole assembly on eBay for $40.00 delivered. Now I have to wait for that to show up. The lights on the blower control and the heater control ***** havent worked for years and it always bugged me so now's my chance to replace them.

I guess I'm just wondering where I went wrong and if anyone know where there are detalied pics of the xle climate control assembly on this forum or elsewhere.

The service manual does not provide much on this subject, nothing to learn there.

Suggest you study the old unit to determine what failed. Determine if the cable is still free to move or is somehow now jammed up.
