Default Idle revs are high..

Hello all, I have a question about an '88 camry that has been having a high idle.

Its similiar to having an auto choke where the rpms sit at about 2,500 but after a rev it drops below 1,000.

It does this when you start the car which is to be expected, however after driving around town and coming to a giveway or stop sign, rather than idling under 1,000 it sits inbetween 2,300-2,500 rpms which can only be lowered with a quick rev.

I am unsure what the go is, is it a timing issue? some easy to diy kind of solution or should I get it properly checked out. I would rather know what it is before taking it to anyone to look at so I know what the go is.

Thank you and nice to meet you all!

Check the followings first.

1. check if there is any leak on your throatlte.(Check also your air filter as well.)
2. check your oxygen sensor is working properly.

If above two have no problem, I guess it could be your trans problem.
(If it is caused by your trans, it will fail sooner or later.)

It sounds like it might be the throttle linkage sticking. I would clean and lub the linkage. If you have a cable link from the pedal to the throttle than on an 88 that cable may need to be replaced. Also look at any sticking that may be occuring with the butterfly valve inside the intake.
