I am looking at mobil 1 synthetic motor oils, I am wondering whats he difference between the extended performance, and the high mileage oils? my camry has 140,000 ,miles on it, no leaks that I can see. Am asking myself why not just the full synthetic mobil 1? does anyone know the difference between them?

 

The answer depends on what you want. Mobil 1 is offered in extended performance, high mileage, fuel economy, super and plain Mobil 1.

High mileage oil has a seal conditioner that supposed to rejuvenate seals to help stop leakage. The oil can have anti-wear additives to compensate for increased part clearances due to accumulated wear and cleaners to remove accumulated sludge and prevent further build up.

Then there is the oil weight. A lower weight oil such as 0W-20 can improve MPG.

One way to determine the oil to use is to look in the owners manual for Toyota's recommended oil weight based upon the air temperature the car is driven in. Then find the same weight in a synthetic. Then determine if you want high mileage or not.

Or use the Mobil oil selector at the website which return a number of recommended oil but you still need to pick the oil weight and high mileage or not.

Might pick Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage as this seems to cover everything.

Wal-Mart lists both Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 High Mileage at the same price.

If you do go to synthetic and decide to increase the oil change interval. Switch to a long life oil filter.

 

Ok, sounds good, but what about those weights like 0W-20, and the 5W-30? I live in Illinois where it gets below 0 in the winter and hot and humid in summer, how about 0W-30, would there be a lot of difference then the 5W-30? The manual says 5W-30, could I go to the 20?

 

Is the car a 2000, 2004 or 2006?

Toyota states 0W-20 can be used for 2006+ if meeting GF-4 specifications which was replaced by GF-5. Mobil 1 is GF-5.

ok, glad its done, lol! I changed my motor oil, but still haven trouble with reading the dip stick. I drove around and checked it, it was like half way between the cold and hot marks, the same with the trans fluid dip stick. is that ok on both dip sticks, or should I add a bit more?

 

Check the motor oil after the car has sat over night. The oil should be between the high and low marks.

The trans fluid marks are hot and cold, checked with engine running and trans in Park.

The hot fluid check is more accurate. If low, SLOWLY add more trans fluid until it is at the hot mark. The trans should not be overfilled with oil. Which is the reason to slowly add fluid and make frequent checks of the level between adding fluid.

 

I checked the trans fluid and it was a little low so I slowly added more I read the stick and above the hot mark it still had fluid not like below the hot mark but real thin like is that ok, I think I over filled it just a touch, but this stick is hard for me to read! the manual says drain and fill 3.7 qts, but I think it took a little more then that, like almost 4 qts, but on the stick it looked low at like 3.7 qts. thats when I added a bit more.
