Oxygen Sensor & Smog Test

Oxygen Sensor & Smog Test
The engine light on my Camry (94) came on. It turns out it was the oxygen sensor that broke. It would cost a few hundered dollars to replace it. However, I am not sure if it's worth it because I will have to do another smog test this year and last time the car only passed the second time (after blowing a big fan at the engine). So the questions are:
1) I drove around 1000 miles with the engine light on. Could that have done damage which will make it less likely to pass the smog test?
2) Considering the last smog test, what would need to be done to pass (cost?)
Thanks
