Default RE: Power Steering

Check the power steering fluid for quantity.

When the engine is hot check the system for air by rotating the steering wheel fully right then left. Watch the fluid level when turning to determine if the fluid level drops in the reservoir, should stay the same level.

When turning the wheel fully right and then left, notice if there is a differance in power steering assist amount between turning direction. If so, the problem may be in the control valve (located where the steering wheel shaft enters the steering rack housing).

Rotate the wheel fully left and then right. Determine as the wheel reaches the stop if the pump makes a noise and the wheel starts to kick a little. The pump has a bypass valve to prevent over presure when the wheel is turned fully left or right and this should kick in. A little noise is normal, a lot is not. If the wheel does not give a sharp response when hitting the stop the pump may not be putting out the correct pressure.

The bypass valve in the pump may be acting up when the fluid is cold, then function OK as it warms up.

Make sure the PS belt is not slipping.

Might try changing the fluid. The easiest route is to remove the old fluid from the reservoir using a large syringe and replacing with new fluild. Do this a number of times for a few days and the fluild in the system will be replaced.
