Default Starter help please (number two)

Gday guys,
Sorted the original problem by whacking in a second hand starter, which started just fine a few times, then refused to do anything. I took it out and put it back in and it started fine a couple of times before refusing to do anything again.
Now you can hear something clicking there to feed power, but nothing is happening.
I also put the old starter in to see if that was all good but nothing from that one which was working sweet apart from not throwing out the cranking cog.
So, new starter, no juice getting to it.
Any ideas? is second starter a dud (but then why did it start ok a few times? although it did sound a little sluggish to get going...)

any help appreciated
