what else broke?
my 96 camry died after pinging for a while. towed it home with a tow chain in neutral. i used my brakes to slow and stop the other car and the trip was about 40 miles. i know i need pads they were smoking pretty bad, maybe a rotor too. what about a tranny?it is a 4spd automatic.
Find out first why the engine quit. If the engine is now bad, there may be no sense in doing other repairs.
If you had the trans in neutral when towing, it should be OK.
Check the rotor surfaces where they contact the pads for color changes. If they have turned blue or some other color they may have overheated.
The test will be when driving the car and determining if the brakes work OK (stop the car normally) and do not result in brake pedal pushing or steering wheel shaking.
Check brake fluid level.
