Default 1990 tranny wont do anything

1990 camry. A friend was driving down the road as sweet as u please and the car just stopped moving. The motor really runs great but the tranny does nothing. I've changed the filter and fluid (which came out looking more like used motor oil than tranny fluid) and it still does nothing. No forward, no reverse, no nothing not even a groan. Any ideas on where I might look would be greatly appreciated. I run a rural paper route and this car is perfect for mileage and durability, but if I can't make it move it's just a $200 boat anchor!

Make sure the gear selector is actually moving the shift lever on the trans and the shift cable is not broke. Somehow putting the trans into neutral.

Make sure the differential gears are not damaged. Raise front end and try to rotate the tires with trans in Drive. Feel for resistance.

You refilled the trans to the proper level?

If all OK the trans has most likely failed internally. Perhaps the result of the trans fluid never being changed, hence the used motor oil appearance.
