Just purchased a 2001 Camry 2.2L from my parents and the check engine light is on. Codes P0420, P0441 and P0446. Car has always been very well maintained. The mechanic they used said that the check engine light wasn't hurting anything and not to worry about it. I need to fix the problems to pass state inspection. The only thing I have done so far is put gas in it and replace the gas cap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

The P0441 and P0446 codes are for the fuel tank emission evaporation system.

If you have the diagnostic info you can run a few tests. You can also visually check for damaged system hose leaking air.

The P0420 code points to a bad catalytic converter. It is possible an 02 or AF sensor could be bad but doubt it.

For this code best to have a competent mechanic having a real time ODBII diagnostic tool look at the O2 or A/F sensor output info to determine if the issue is the converter.

Or replace the converter.

You can drive the car OK with these problems but it will never pass an emission tests. Plus all of these codes are emissions related.

Tell the mechanic you need to pass the emissions test, if they are unable to help find another mechanic.
