Thanks for your input. I have heard that I might be able to go up to a 2011. Do you have any thoughts?

The engine was used in US gas Camry from 2002 to 2009 (2AZFE model) and in the hybrid model through 2011 (2AZ-FXE). The hybrid engine had a different intake cam and higher compression pistons. The gas and hybrid engines being purposed differently would assume this would cause issues if interchanged. If looking for a replacement do more research. Toyota may have made minor changes between 2002 and 2009 to the gas only engine. This might require swapping exterior bolt on parts from the old to replacement new engine and here perhaps sensors, throttle body, who knows. Its common to have to this issue when swapping if the engine is not in the same generation of car. The used in Camry year range spans 2 generations of Camry.

One can get the engine build date from decoding the engine serial number. The internet would have info on this.

Toyota used to publish very specific engine and chassis changes from the previous year when introducing the next year of car. The internet may also this info.

From what can determine it appears the engines through 2006 had the same 154 HP. After 2006 it had 158 HP thus something changed.

Also look into Solara which had the same engine as one option.

A decent engine seller should be able to guarantee fit for car year going into. Parting out cars can be found on Craigslist. Not sure if engines are still being imported from Japan but if so make double sure it fits as Japan engines can have their own variations from US purposed engines.
