Default 97 Camry interior door handle problems

I tried searching and was unsuccessful, so sorry if this has been addressed before. I recently acquired a 97 Camry LE V6 with 235k on original engine and trans. The interior front driver's side door handle was not working properly and now doesn't work at all. I tried replacing the handle with a new one, but that is not the prolem. I have tried pulling the rod that connects the interior handle and it moves back and forth, but will not open the door. The exterior handle works and opens the door with no problem. Is this a common problem? If so, any idea on what might be the problem? I know it is an older car with alot of miles and the door had been opened alot. Any help is appreciated.

I fixed it, the cables just needed to be bent to where they would work. Either they bent over the years of use or the mechanism has worn from use. Either way it works now and thank you to me for the help. Oh, and the car has 279k on original engine and trans.
