High mileage maintenance
Hi, all. I just picked up an 03 Camry 2.4. 184k miles. I don't know any history on it. Are there any repairs I should go ahead n knock out to try n ensure I keep rolling as long as possible? Thanks.
Check the color of the power steering, trans and brake fluid. Worn out trans fluid is the No 1 cause of trans failure. Can pump/suck out then and replace the PS fluid at the reservoir on a repeated basis until it becomes clear. Antifreeze corrosion additives wear out. Toyota brand coolant is red/pink.
Consider changing to synthetic engine oil. This change to prevent the oil ring holes in the piston from gumming up which can be a problem with this engine.
Monitor coolant level. The engine can have a issue with head bolt threads in the block pulling out causing a head bolt failure. The radiator has plastic uppers and lowers which can crack with usage.
You could inspect the serpentine belt as his drives the water pump.
Listen to the engine at cold start for any rattles such as timing chain due to a worn tensioner.
