I just got a 99 camry LE.
I was wondering, what kind of mileage should I get and about how much horse power. Its a four cyclinder, but if there is more than one size 4cyl they put in Camry I have no idea how to tell the difference. Also, can I leave overdrive on all time except for on hills? Btw its a lot better than my moms 05 civic.
Overall city/hwy MPG is typically 25-26 when using a 10 ethanol blend.
On long, continuous hwy drives MPG can be 32.
HP is around 135.
There was only one 4 cylinder engine offered, a 5S-FE model. This engine was used in Camry from 1992-2001 and on a few other Toyota models.
If you look on the engines intake manifold you may see the numbers 2200, referring to the displacement.
You can leave the O/D on all the time, even in mountains. However, if in the mountains and you find the trans shifting up and down all the time you might turn it off.
Think of it as downshifting to higher gear to keep the engine RPM up. Something you might do when pulling a trailer, etc.
The 4 cylinder is designed for fuel economy and city driving. In the hills, with a few people in the car it might lack on power. For most driving you will not notice a problem.
There should be a button on the shifter console plate going around the sifter and parking brake. When pressed in, it will change the gear shift timing a little, supposed to be more aggressive shifting, but this is a 4 cylinder engine, so. I think it is labeled ETC, but forget.
