My 96 Camry V6 is blowing blue smoke and has a strong smell of fuel. Rough during idle and running - suspect that it could be a valve problem or could it be more sinister?

Normally, that smoke is referring to a blown head gasket. Check to see if the engine oil has a mixture of antifreeze in it. If it does, that is your problem.

Do a compression or leak down test.

Check spark plugs for uniformity, signs of oil or excess gasoline.

Check oil for signs of gasoline.

Could also be worn or broken rings or glazed cylinder bore.

The above tests should reveal something about the problem area.
