Opinion on shredded tire and driving Camry on flat tire
I wanted to get some opinions.
On a Friday, my wife hit a road sign in her Toyota Camry but could not remember how or where. She quickly pulled over and roadside assistance put her spare on the car. The tire blew out the sidewall. An officer showed up, could not find the sign, and gave her his card, and left.
On the following Monday, as she was driving to work at 8:30 am, she hit something again, I'm assuming a curb. She says the car started running rough but wanted to try and make it to work. She has no clue what she hit.
My wife drove about 40 mph on a flat tire after hitting a curb in her Toyota Camry. A guy pointed out to her it was flat. Someone also called 911 on her. She finally lost some control and hit another curb (I could see that curb due to the marks in the concrete and curb about 200 ft from where she pulled over) and then pulled over to a safe spot.
I was on the phone with her trying to get a call roadside again to tow her car and figure this situation out.
The Police showed up while I was on the phone and my wife put the phone down. I could hear them in the background. He was asking about the damaged bumper. The officer then could hear me on the phone and in less than five minutes, got on the phone and said this is a criminal investigation for OWI.
She failed one of the field sobriety tests & blew a zero on the breathalyzer. The officer then called me and said that based on his experience, she was intoxicated with some type of drug. My wife doesn't do drugs. She told the officer she only takes a sleep aid at night. She told him the wrong over-the-counter sleep aid but she takes Benedryl every night at about 11 pm. The officer arrested her for OWI calling me back saying I need to have a talk with my wife about the type of drugs she takes. They arrested her and took her to the hospital for further testing. She requested a doctor to examine her and when I called the doctor he said she didn't appear intoxicated. She took a blood test. I could not get her out of jail until the next day. Needless to say, this is going to be expensive as I have hired a lawyer. Yes, I took her to his doctor for quick blood test since the police results could take months.
The officer could not find the shredded spare tire but said she drove at least 2 miles on the tire. Based on where she said it started feeling rough, it was about 1.5 miles.
1) How long do you think she could drive this back tire based on what it looks like this?
2) How long would it take the tire on a small spare for the rim to shed look like this?
3) It is possible/reasonable to drive without really knowing the tire is flat? Until what point? (I know I would never, but my wife gets nervous and I saw some on Youtube)
I can understand how that officer thinks a normal person would never, but I can also think in panic someone could drive on a flat tire. I feel like I'm in a dream right now.
