Default Handbrake/footbrake?

Just bought a 2002 Camry XLE V6. This is my third Camry, previously owned a 92 and 99 LE 4cyl as well as a 99 Tacoma and 96 4Runner. This one has a few minor interior issues, common for a 20 year old car. However, one thing I have noticed: Some of the 5th Gen Camrys have hand brakes while others, like mine, have the foot activated parking brake. Is there any particular reason for this? I am missing the "flap" that holds the drinks in place on the drink holder lid, and it looks like the drink holders may be different between the two styles. But I am confused as to why Toyota would use two different styles of parking brake, especially when both are automatic transmission.
