Changing your spark plugs is a simple DIY to restore performance of your beloved Camry.

This article applies to the Toyota Camry 4th and 5th Generation (1997-2006).

Thinking of doing your own routine maintenance? Take heart, the Camry is one of the easier vehicles to do self-maintenance on. Changing the spark plugs is one of easiest maintenance jobs on this car that you can do yourself. A professional isn't going to be cheap, so performing this work yourself will save you a nice bit of bucks in your wallet. There are no special tools required aside from a spark plug socket, which should be a staple in your socket set anyway. The only concern you should have is making sure that you do not cross-thread the plugs on the way in or to over-tighten them once they are seated.

Materials Needed

  • Ratchet with extension and spark plug socket

Step 1 – Pop the hood

  • Pull the hood release switch from the driver's compartment.
  • Raise and lock out the hood.
  • Locate the spark plug bank on the engine block.

Step 2 – Pull the plug wires

  • Grab the boot of each plug wire and pull it off the spark plug.
  • The plug wire from the boot to the plug is actually rather long.
Figure 2. Pull the boots straight up and off each plug. They will be a little tight and should make a pop when pulled out.

Pro Tip

Check the bottom of each boot after you pull it out. If there is oil on any of them, that is a sign that the valve cover seals needs to be replaced.

Step 3 – Remove the spark plugs

  • Insert your 5/8-inch socket into the first plug hole.
  • Loosen the plug and pull it out.
  • Repeat for the other plugs.
  • Inspect each plug for condition of the igniter to make sure they aren't burning too hot or too cold.
Figure 3. Your spark plug socket will slide right into the hole and around the plug to loosen as well as remove it.

Pro Tip

If you don't have a spark plug socket but a regular 5/8-inch socket, you can remove the plug easily by taking a long section of 3/8-inch tubing and sliding it into the plug holes after the plugs have been loosened. The tip of the spark plug will slide into the hose and come right out.

Step 4 – Install the new plugs

  • Place your new plugs into the holes (one at a time) and thread them into the hole by hand. Then, lightly snug them with your ratchet. Torque spec is about 15 lbs./ft.
  • Make sure you do not cross-thread when you place them in the hole or over-tighten when you put your ratchet to them.
  • Once they are all installed, replace the plug wires.
  • Close the hood.
  • Start your Camry up and take it for a test drive, listening for any unusual noises and ensure that the idle as well as acceleration are smooth.
