Toyota Camry 1997-2011: Why is My Brake Light On?

Some simple problems are at hand when the brake light remains on, but for the most part, they're all easy to diagnose. Continue reading to find out what is causing the brake light to turn on.

This article applies to the Toyota Camry (1997-2011).

Most of the problems at hand with a lingering emergency brake light on your dash are very easy to diagnose, and since this car is fitted with an OBD-II system, easy to have a mechanic inspect. If you're feeling adventurous, there are a few things to do before taking it down to the shop.

Material Needed

  • Brake fluid

Step 1 – Inspect your brake fluid reservoir

Your brake fluid level may be low.

With the car warm, make sure the fluid is topped up. Do not add any more if it is.

  • Undo the cap and inspect the indicator lines on the side of the reservoir. Determine if they correspond with the fluid level.
  • If the brake pads have worn too low, the fluid may drop slightly to compensate.
  • If the fluid is exceptionally low, there may be a leak that ought to be investigated.

Step 2 – Check the hand brake

The hand brake/rear brakes may be poorly adjusted.

If the hand brake is poorly adjusted, it may not grab the rear drum but still trigger the light when pulled, thereby making the car feel as if the brake is off. Depress the hand brake button and ensure the handle is as low as it will drop. Now pull the hand brake tight and check engagement. If the hand brake seems to have too much or too little slack, it can be adjusted. This requires removing the plastic hand brake cover, which requires removal of the center console in 4th generation Camrys. This is not difficult, but just a bit time consuming. With the hand brake exposed, adjust the locking nut on the end of the cable.

Step 3 – Look for other dash lights

Your alternator might be going out.

If the alternator light remains on in conjunction with the emergency brake lights, there might be an electrical issue at hand.

  • Inspect the dash and verify any other lights that remain on while driving.

Step 4 – Inspect the float in the brake fluid reservoir

The float might be sticking.

  • After warming the engine, open hood to inspect the inside of the fluid reservoir.
  • If the float is sticking, remove the reservoir to clean it.
