My center console does the same thing. a little tap and it comes back on. I'm not too sure about a 98', but in my 01' you can just basically rip off the blk piecees to the center console to get to the back of the AC controls/radio. Unscrew the screws that hold down the ac/radio and check if there is a loose connection, or just replace the bulbs.

In my car all you have to do is take a flat head screw driver and pry open the plastic piece that holds down the "PRND21" and after that i believe there are screws to unscrew to actually get to where the bulbs are.
