Default slate's 1989 toyota camry's starting mystery?(hopefully solved soon)

Thankyou so much for your help, Im gonna take this info. to the mechanic and hopefully he can fix it this week. Ill post how it goes once I find out the outcome, I"m keeping my fingers crossed, again thanks..

My guess is its a defective starter motor ... even with cleaning the contact points. Also check the ground cable.

If cleaning the solenoid contacts solved the issue for a time the contacts could still be the problem.

If you have jumper cables the next time the starter fails to work connect one end of a cable to the battery and touch the other end to the terminal on the starter motor where the large cable coming from the solenoid attaches (make sure the trans is neutral or park). If the starter now engages, the contacts are not making a good connection.

Toyota may still sell replacement contacts, the mechanic can install them.
