The trans has a differential housing where the axles plug in. Inside are a set of gears that powers the axle. The set is held in place at each end by bearings. Include in the set are smaller gears which the axles slide into when installed.
It is possible wear in the gears the axle plugs into is causing excess play.
The link has a diagram of a typical front wheel drive trans.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PART 14. Fits: Aveo T200 Hatchback, Aveo T250 Notchback, G3 | Nalley Buick GMC Brunswick
In the diagram the differential gear set is No 4.
The set is retained by end bearings No 7 and 8.
Inside the gear set are small gears the axle actual plugs into.
If the bearings or small gears are worn the axle can move up and down too much.
