Default 2005 Wiper linkage disconnecting from shaft

Twice now the link/arm to the driver's side wiper shaft has spontaneously come off. Twice I have pressed it back onto the shaft; there is no bolt or nut to retain the arm - it's just a press-fit. I don't imagine my 2nd 'repair' will last. Any thoughts? I thought I might drill & tap the shaft to keeep the arm from slipping off - I'll try that before spending $180. on a new assembly.

Warranty ran out I guess. Is thisa ball and socket type connection?

no - just a splined shaft press-fit into a hole on a stamped piece of steel. I was surprised to see this.

Picture would help. Maybe drill a hole to accept a cotter pin?

Could the threaded section of the shaft for a nut have broken off?

only 1.5mm of shaft extends beyond the link arm; no meat to drill thru & pin. My thought is to drill/tap along the long axis of the shaft & machine screw thru a washer to retain the link arm. But why is it coming off to begin with?

I think what toyomoho was wondering is, did the shaft have a threaded portion and nut originally? If the thread broke off then your only option is to drill and tap.

ah - thanks for that clarification! I don't think so b/c the passenger-side shaft (which has remained intact) has no nut & also only protrudes 1.5mm beyond the link arm. 100% press-fit scenario.

Good luck with that...same thing happened to my Corolla wipers, but I didn't even try to repair it. Just got a new one instead. There's no harm in tying out a new fix method, worst case is it doesn't work, and you have to buy a new one anyway.
