Camry 5SFE Timing Belt, Water Pump, Oil Seal Replacement
#31
Speaking of harmonic balancers, if your Camry is 15 to 20+ years old, and you're planning any timing-belt / water pump work, you might want to consider replacing the harmonic balancer.
Last summer, while returning home from Maryland, the one in my '96 4-cylinder separated at the rubber bonding-strip, throwing the alternator-AC belt off. Fortunately, the waterpump runs off the timing-belt, so I was able to limp to the nearest shopping center. If it hadn't been very humid and raining heavily, I might have tried to limp all the way back to Alexandria, Virginia. But I needed be able to run the wipers, lights and defogger. So I called for a tow, which is included with my insurance policy.
The new aftermarket balancer from Pep-Boys was about $100 and took me about an hour to install. No idea what a new one from Toyota costs.
Happy Motoring, Mark

Oil or coolant leak?
Plan to spend a weekend if this is first time you have done the job.
You will need a method to hold the crank when unbolting the crank bolt.
Plus a bolt-on puller for the harmonic balancer.
If changing the oil pump seal you need both the drive shaft seal and pump to housing seal.
Suggest you do home work on how the job is done. This to include the official method from Toyota service info (search web) and other sites and or a manual such as Haynes.
This site has lots of threads on replacing the timing belt.
Once you review the process post back with any questions.

I have a 1995 Camry V6 and need to do the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and whatever is worn.
Never done before so appreciate the information. Even though it's a four should still be helpful. Thank you.
Not a mechanic but working on cars since 16.

Suggest doing a internet search for sites like the one below:

Prior to taking things apart rotate the crank CW until the engine is at No 1 TDC. When you get the belt covers off take note of the timing marks on the cam pulleys before removing the belt.
Check cam and cranks seals for oil leakage as already have then engine apart.
Issues can be difficultly loosening the crank pulley bolt while holding the pulley still. The pulley may need to removed with a puller. Use a bolt-on puller not hook type as the pulley is two piece.
Once you get the new belt on, recheck timing marks by rotating crank CW twice and again recheck timing marks.
Various manuals detail a timing belt that has timing mark lines on it for reference. A Toyota OEM belt may have these but not an aftermarket.
