Question coolant leak, need advice.

coolant is leaking from the belt side of the motor. i have a 99 camry 4cyl. any ideas of what could the problem be. im guessing its the water pump and if so how can i trouble shoot. taking off the timing belt looks like a pita. does the camry have the grenade like tensioners with the pin? my pops told me he spent 450 in 09 for new tb and wp.

$450 US would be a good price. The dealer would want $600-800.

The radiator intake hose for the pump plus thermostat is on the passenger side of the engine, check this area for leaks. Could be corroded thermostat housing, leaking gasket, etc.

If coolant is leaking from under the timing cover then most likely the water pump. However they seldom leak thus check other areas first.

If the engine has a serpentine belt it may have the pin type tensioner.

The timing belt tensioner has a spring and bolts. The spring pulls the tensioner pulley into the belt, the bolts are tightened to lock down the pulley.

If you have the time and a few tools you can replace the pump. Most of the cost is for labor, if the first time at doing this plan to spend a day at it as it is a learning process. Some experienced folks can do the job in a few hours.
