1990 Camry Random Shut-off
I've been having on and off issues with my 1990 Toyota Camry 2.0L. When driving for about 30 minutes or so the car randomly will die. This has left me stranded in the past only for me to come back later and it runs again. When it dies the engine cuts out all at once and will crank but not start. Previous trouble shooting narrowed it down to the fuel pump not kicking on because the relay isn't getting power and the CEL doesn't come on. I let it sit for a few hours to a day and CEL is back and it starts only to repeat the process. I'm at a loss with this one.
What are you stating? When the engine dies the CEL is not on but if the car sits for time the CEL comes on? Are you thinking there is link between the light being off and the engine dying then when the light is on the engine starts again? If the light is on have you checked for codes?
Did you do any work to remedy the issue with the relay not getting power?
The relay will only close when the engine is cranking over to start or engine is running.
Check 7.5A IGN fuse, 15A EFI fuse, EFI Main Relay,
IGN fuse powers main relay which powers the relay that turns power to fuel pump on.
Inside the engine compartment is SMALL rectangle box with a flip up lid. This may be bolted to a strut tower. Inside the box are electrical contacts. Find the +B and FP terminals. The underside of the lid may have a diagram of the terminals. If not the two terminals are next to each other on a terminal row that only has 3 of the 4 terminals connected to something as one terminal connects to nothing.
The next time the engine dies connect the +B and FP terminals which will directly power the fuel pump.
If you think the issue is electrical power to other circuits PLUS the fuel relay run down what items don't work when the engine will not start.
