Mike, I replaced my gauge cluster out of a car with a known good cluster.

Note: Do not remove the cluster with the ignition on, you will activate the airbag light.

I'm having difficulty with my tach as well. Speedo works fine. I tried a salvage cluster and the tach still didn't work. On the salvage cluster the speedo did not work correctly (doing about 50 MPH and it said 140!!!) so I put the original cluster back in and I got speedo back. Maybe I will check the wiring going to the tach for a bad connection or check the wire going to the gauge cluster. I have replaced the distributor a couple times already in this car (93 Camry DX 2.2L) not to cure this problem though, and it made no difference at all. Answers? Solutions? ECU? Ignitor?

The tach receives the RPM signal input from the igniter (a black wire).

There are two other electrical connections to the tach inside the cluster. One for DC power common to the speedo and warming lights, the other a ground common with speedo and fuel gauge.

Check black wire connection in the harness plug.

As to the speedo, there could be electronic device in/near the speedo which modifies the speed signal from the speed sensor on the trans. This device in the replacement cluster could be different then the original cluster resulting a the speedo showing a higher MPH.

Hello Paul,

I seriously doubt that I will get any reply from you since your Last Activity was on 04-14-2009 @ 11:27 PM!

Nonetheless, in case you do decide to come back I was wondering what was the final solution to this issue?

Default Electrolytic Capacitors!

I changed out the Ignition Igniter (a known good working one) and that didn't resolve the problem!

I can tell you that it is such a great feeling when a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) falls in as planned!

I disassembled the dash and took out the original (OLD) Instrument Cluster and replaced it with a newer one from a 1995 Toyota Camry LE from the Salvage yard. Paid a cool $21.00 plus the $2.00 entrance fee.

Yes, I tried to follow one Video at YouTube about trying to set the mileage to what the vehicle has but, I was NOT about to BUST UP a newer Cluster so, I ditched the idea and just will check box the form saying that the vehicle has unknown mileage. However, Instead of selling it, I am anticipating that I may just donate the car to the Boys Club or Veterans Organization instead. Someday........

Okay, just to let everyone know and to be clear, the newer Instrument Cluster works like a CHARM! Using my I-PHONE (4S) and with a very accurate Speed Application (the one I had been using all this time so, I didn't get a speeding citation), the newer Speedometer is RIGHT ON THE MARK!

Additionally, the Tachometer is now registering 2,000 RPMs during hard acceleration during the up-shift and this is amazing since it never went more than 1,000 RPM.

All in all, I am a super happy camper!
