1994 Camry Reverse light indicator & Reverse light
Reverse dash light for reverse does not illuminate (neither do the back up lights) unless I push the shifter really hard toward park or squeeze the shifter button to put it into park. When I do that, the reverse light illuminates and the back up lights come on. It seems like the sensor (?) is out of adjustment but I can't find any information on where this sensor is located. I thought in might be in the gear shifter area but I don't see it anywhere. It has been this way for awhile but I bought a stereo with a back up camera and the back up lights activate the camera. I searched high and low on the web and youtube and just can't seem to find out anything. Please help.

There is a rotary electrical switch mounted on the transmission shift rod that comes out of the trans housing. Among other things the switch turns the trans gear indicator lights on/off plus back up lights.
The shift lever in the car moves a push/pull cable that connects an arm mounted on the shift rod. When the shift lever is moved, the cable moves the arm which rotates the shift rod tp select a gear and also change the switches position.
If you need to move the shift lever to get the lights to come on check out the switch. Plus make sure the cable is adjusted properly so that the trans gear indicated by the lever is the same as the trans gear selected at the trans.
