Default 1997 camry 2.2 throwing knock sensor code P0305

someone help! forgive me for this huge rant/desperate plea. I replaced the sensor with a new one, no dice. The car has 167k, runs pretty well. got the car from a tow yard, the light was on full time not intermittent. when i replaced the sensor i noticed the wire was just sort of dangling there not pinned up like it should be. also there is a few wires that were spliced and heatshrinked near the intake, going to the main harness. The insulation and ground/sheilding where cut short of the heatshrink on the wires. is it possible someone tried replacing the harness and just did a **** job?? i need to smog this car, and from what ive read so far hasent really shed any light on the repair. do i need a new harness from the dealer?? or am i gonna have to get one off a junkyard? and if the previous owner did cut and splice a new harness in, how would i replace it and still keep the sheilding intact?? ive read that its one wire that goes straight to the ecu?? the replacement harness shown online looks to be for the 6cly model only. im lost someone help!

The wiring to the sensor is shielded cable to prevent outside electrical interference. The wire and its shielding runs from the sensor to the ECU. If the shielding is not continuous from the ECU to the sensor there can be a trouble code.

You can try to fix the current wiring. See post below where a member successfully did this as replacing wire would be difficult.

Doubt the dealer has access to replacement wiring anymore. Would need to search auto yards.
